Upham Hotel

     Built in 1871, the Upham is the oldest continuously operated hotel in all of historic Santa Barbara. This 58 room historical landmark is surrounded by an acre of gardens (mature trees, colorful flowers) that intertwine several guest room buildings -- offering privacy and serenity near downtown. Staying there was like becoming a part of history. The hotel was built by a cousin of Abraham Lincoln.
     This is a bit hard to describe because from the outside and with the charm of the front desk, complimentary offerings (extended continental breakfast with fresh baked items, evening refreshments including late night cookies and milk) and the history of the structure, you want to call it a B&B. But with a full service restaurant, large lobby area, wireless internet, and meeting facilities and large rooms, it is more of a historical, boutique hotel.
     Aside from their standard guest rooms, all of which are tastefully decorated and not "frilly", they offer cottage rooms (fireplace and private entrance) and even a private master suite with an enormous bathroom with claw-foot tub, waterfall shower, and a private patio. Guest rooms have either one queen or one king bed and their best value rooms (Bungalow rooms) are nice but were not recommended to us for someone coming to celebrate a special occasion. The guest mix is made up mostly of couples and business travelers.
     Overall, a great place to stay where you can easily walk in to town but feel away from the hustle and bustle of Santa Barbara.

- Relax in the gardens and enjoy the tranquilty and serenity as you eat your breakfast or sample the evening hors d'oeuvres.
- Have dinner in their restaurant (Louie's) which has an ultra romantic, historical setting. Take the easy walk in to town afterward.
