Four Seasons Biltmore

Santa Barbara is widely known as the "American Riviera," and this hotel exemplifies that spirit. This elegant garden getaway mixes the old world Spanish charm with a very comfortable, modern and elegant décor. There is a generous use of beautiful fabrics that set the mood in the room for romance or just some time to sit back, relax and reflect.
We have been on a lot of tours of hotels during our career. Until recently, I have never seen a hotel where everything was, well, perfect. That truly describes this destination resort - a perfect blend of old and new, historical and modern, elegant and casual. Although it is tucked away in the exclusive conclave of Montecito, you can easily take one of the resorts complimentary bikes in to downtown Santa Barbara.
When you enter along Channel Drive to the hotel, one side of the street is lined by the ocean and beautiful Butterfly beach while the other side features the 25 acre resort still known by locals as "The Biltmore." Walking through the grand archway and in to the lobby, you know you are in a historical landmark of Santa Barbara. Everything is so finely detailed - right down to the original decorative tiles from 1927 (and matching ones carefully reproduced to continue the theme). The overall feel is Spanish/Mediterranean. Just off of the lobby are two dining areas including Bella Vista - which is true to its name with outstanding ocean views. There is a sophisticated decor yet its resort casual -- with an innovative California wine-country cuisine and a decor that includes fireplaces, water features, rich mahogany and a retractable roof. You don't say this about a lot of hotel dining rooms but this is one I would make a special trip to see.
As you walk around the property, it appears as though you are always walking through a beautiful garden. You never quite feel like you are at a resort hotel but more like a large, private Spanish Hacienda. Through the end of the main building, you come out to a huge lawn area that features places to relax as well as a crouquet lawn and putting green. Through another courtyard is a beautiful fountain that borders two whirlpool tubs (each at different temps) and a swimming pool (you guessed it - surrounded by lovely gardens) that is tiled with real pearls. This is just one of many details that make this a unique place to stay. If you really want to relax, you can't miss their spa - with several treatment rooms overlooking the ocean, it was rated the #4 spa in North America by Conde Naste.
Once inside a guest room, you don't so much notice how opulent it is, but how clean, comfortable and well, perfect, it is. Rooms have all of the expected amenities - terrycloth robes and slippers, DVD players, plasma screen TV's, high-end bath amenities, deep soaking tubs and rain shower and high speed internet access. Rooms are of good size (avg size 330 sq ft). There is a genereous use of beautiful fabrics that set the mood in the room for romance or just some time to sit back, relax and reflect. It is as if every room is a showroom - with everything you need to feel at home. All rooms have a rain shower and at least a deep soaking tub. Because of the way the resort was built, there really are not any rooms with a full ocean view BUT there are lovely garden, pool and mountain views and you get your fill of the ocean while frequenting the restaurant, club and Butterfly beach. There are also expansive suites/cottages which range up to 2000 square feet.
One of the features that makes this hotel stand apart from its competition is guest access to the Coral Casino Club across the street. This exclusive recreational facility featured an olympic sized pool, hot tub overlooking the ocean, and ocean front dining facilities. Membership fees here are, let's just say ultra expensive, so being able to use this facility is a magnificent benefit. The club also sits adjacent to Butterfly beach. If you are traveling as a couple with a child, they offer a kids club (ages 5-12) -- free of charge. And that is one final thing that makes this place stand out - there is no resort fee.
This is truly one of those romantic getaways where you come back from your trip and tell people how great you enjoyed your hotel and how much you want to return. And as we found out on our tour, many of the staff have worked there for as many as 35 years and they would love to welcome you back!
